About Homeopathy

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that treats the whole person by stimulating and supporting the body’s own natural power of healing. It is based on the principle that “like cures like”. In simple words, it means that any substance, which can produce symptoms in a healthy person, can cure similar symptoms in a person who is sick. For example, an onion is a substance which makes your eyes water and your nose burn. If you are having an attack of hay fever with watering eyes and a burning nose, a homeopathic remedy made from onion can relieve it. This idea is referred to as the “Law of Similars“, and was understood by Aristotle and Hippocrates and mentioned in ancient Hindu manuscripts. It was however Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician, who developed homeopathy into the scientific system of healing that we know today.

Homeopathic remedies

Homeopathic medicines (referred to as ‘remedies’) are prepared from natural substances found in the plant, mineral and animal kingdoms. The remedies are ultra-dilute and work on an energetic level. They are safe, gentle, non-addictive, and have no side-effects. The remedies are also ethical - they are tested on people, not on animals. Currently there are more than three thousand substances used as homeopathic remedies to treat everything from colds and cough to arthritis and cancer.

Since homeopathic remedies are devoid of all chemical toxicity, homeopathy is the ideal system of medicine for people of all ages, even the most sensitive like an expectant mother or a newborn baby. Difficulties during pregnancy and the delivery or its aftermath as well as all the problems experienced by the newborn can be dealt with very efficiently and without side effects with homeopathy.

Do I have to stop taking my other medication?

In some cases homeopathy can work well alongside conventional medication. However where the healing systems of the body are being suppressed by conventional drugs(such as steroids and hormone treatments) homeopathic treatment may be more difficult; remedies may take longer to work, or may not work at all. It is essential that your homeopath is made aware of any conventional medication you take, whether prescribed by a doctor or bought over the counter, including vitamins and other supplements. There can be conflicts between the two systems of treatment, and so it is important for the homeopath to be able to identify when this is happening. There may come a point when these conflicts mean that you need to decide which treatment you are going to rely on. It must however be emphasised that no responsible homeopath will ask you to reduce or stop your conventional medication without first consulting with your GP.

What evidence is there that homeopathy actually works?

There is a vast body of testimonial evidence from individual patients that homeopathy worked for them. These personal testimonies are often credible and supported by medical and photographic records. This kind of anecdotal evidence has little scientific value, but it is very persuasive for patients who have not been helped by ‘scientific’ medicine.
A service evaluation at Bristol Homeopathic Hospital recorded the outcome of homeopathic treatment in over 6,500 consecutive patients over a 6 year period. At follow-up, 70% of patients reported an improvement in their health, including 50% who reported ‘major improvement’. Patients were referred by their GP or hospital specialist after conventional options had failed or because conventional treatment was contraindicated.
Homeopathy is recognised by the World Health Organisation as the second largest therapeutic health system in use in the world. According to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, 10 % of the UK population now uses homeopathy – that’s up to nine million people.
There is a significant body of published scientific evidence that homeopathy works, in the form of randomised control trials (RCTs), meta-analyses of trials, outcome studies, in-vitro (test-tube) research and - most of all - clinical observations and records. A recent report commissioned by the Swiss Government concluded, after thorough assessment of the research and clinical evidence, that homeopathy is both clinically effective and good value for money. The report recommends that homeopathy should be available on the Swiss national health insurance program. For more on this document click here.
